Internal Communications Team Maturity: A Group Therapy Workshop
Carey Dearnley, Global Manufacturing Communications | Merck
Many internal communication teams’ origin stories start with a few passionate people tossed into the role and responsibility of managing the communications for an organization. The pressures of everyday communication and constant business change make it difficult to develop your teams’ capabilities, processes, and strategies; moreover, there’s no framework or roadmap to serve as guidance.
Pinaki Kathiari, CEO of digital communication agency, Local Wisdom, built an Internal Communication Team Maturity Model to help communication managers and directors identify where they are, envision where they want to be, and plot a course to get there. This engaging and interactive group therapy session gives you access to the Maturity Model framework, diagnoses your level using a simple five-minute assessment, and facilitates deep group discussion allowing you to harness the wisdom in the room. Whether your comms team is well-established or starting from scratch, you’ll walk away with solutions and resources to level up.
In this session and discussions, you’ll gain:
An overview of the maturity model's levels and layers
An assessment of your level
An understanding of the challenges your peers face
Tips and solutions to level up your comms team capabilities

Ensuring Your Employees Thrive In The Digital Workplace
Charles Chesnut, Vice President, Digital Marketing | Integral
Ethan McCarty, CEO | Integral
Employees can be an organization’s best advocates and ambassadors since they are the conduit for conducting business and ensuring success. Therefore, it is essential for every organization to ensure their most valuable public is engaged, informed, and heard. The session will focus on how organizations can effectively engage and activate employees in a digital landscape.
In the past, employers could focus primarily on what employees had in common. Today, employers must also respond to differences within and between employee populations. Attendees will learn from a hands-on, data-driven workshop focused on creating a more effective employee experience using organizational intranets and other channels.
This workshop will include:
Attendee ice breaker and introductions
Overview of Integral’s recent findings related to employee experience, digital tools, digital transformation, and organizational intranets
Case study of digital tools and transformations: the risks and rewards
Customized questionnaire and table exercise focused around communication, collaboration, and culture in a digital work environment with report outs and group discussion
Attendees will learn:
Assessing and addressing gaps in understanding employee use of digital tools and preferences
Organizational rituals that build and reinforce values, connection, and positive behaviors
Cultivating communication channels using managers to bring non-managers in more deliberately
CommTech tools that matter
The key insights and takeaways will help communication leaders adjust and rethink their approach to the employee experience in the digital workplace for improved communication, culture, and collaboration.

Cultivating An Author Community—Deltanet
Mallory Schroth, Senior Manager-Platforms, Corporate Communications | Delta Air Lines
Chris Sweigart, General Manager, Platforms & Content, Corporate Communications | Delta Air Lines
Over the past three years, the value of internal communications has become clearer than ever before. Organizations have a responsibility to keep their employees informed, inspired and connected while employees seek out critical information they need to do their jobs. An intranet platform can do so much: provide company, divisional and department updates and serve as a reliable source for mission-critical documents and resources. It’s a lot of information, much of it requiring intimate knowledge of the business and a variety of functions.
At Delta, we’ve cultivated a community of site owners and authors from among our 80,000 employees spread across divisions, departments and disciplines. Their contributions from across a diverse organizations are the life blood of our intranet, Deltanet.
In this session, Delta will share the strategies, opportunities and challenges of fostering an author community with content targeted towards employee group’s interests and needs, while providing centralized governance, training and best practices.
It will further explore how we’re considering the author and site owner roles as we plan for our transition.

Out Of The Box Intranet? Seamless Digital Integrations
Phillips 66 converted their intranet to SharePoint Online, going from a highly customized site to an out-of-the-box model with zero customization. This also allowed them to change the intranet from an information dumping ground to a living breathing integrated information source.
As this model has “settled in” across the company, the next challenge is to provide a level of personalization that improves the employee experience and enhances efficiency.
In this session learn about how this journey has led us to use the combination of out-of-the-box and integrations to make our intranet meaningful and efficient for employees.
Why decide to go “out-of-the-box” vs. custom development?
How they are using integration to create a personal experience
What they are doing to help our employees find their relevant information as easily as possible

Migrating Your Intranet Platform: The “Lift & Shift” Approach Versus User-Centric Design
Ian Lockhart, Corporate Vice President. Head of Digital Workplace and Business Partner (GBS) | New York Life Insurance Company
In 2021, New York Life migrated its entire collaborative social intranet to a new platform, delivering different capabilities, and features. While we originally took the “lift and shift” approach to move most of the legacy content, there were some key areas where we needed to have the end-user shape the ultimate end game from a design and experience perspective.
Come and learn our lessons, specifically:
What to migrate from your intranet content, when and how
When to simply “lift and shift” versus when to invest in user-centric design
How to leverage feedback, metrics and more to shape the future
Who to partner with to make it all happen, and generate a user-focused promotional campaign
